Salzburg City - Austria

Salzburg Skyline Mirabell Palace, SalzburgMirabell Palace, Salzburg

The old city of Salzburg nestles between the river and the rocky outcrop of the Monchsberg Hill that along with the Hohensalzburg Fortress dominates the skyline for miles around. Salzburg is really famous for two things, as the place of Mozart's birth, and The Sound of Music which was filmed in city and surrounding countryside.

Salzburg's historic centre is small and compact and everything is within easy walking distance. North of the river Salzach is the Mirabell palace with its wonderful gardens and fantastic views of the city's church spires and castle.

The Mozart connection is exploited in Salzburg with both his place of birth and the main residence of his parents open to the public. It's better to appreciate the composers talent in one of the many concerts held daily throughout the city.

The city lies between high hills which offer lovely views of the surrounding mountains and plains. The best view is from the Monchsberg Hill, reached by public lift. Here, from the terrace of the slightly baffling Museum of Modern Art you can see the city's spires laid out below with the river winding its way through the middle. There are many elegant Baroque buildings lining the river and the main streets as well as the many concert halls and theatres.

Dominating the city's skyline is the massive Hohensalzburg fortress. Surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs the fortress is reached by funicular and affords fantastic views of the old city as well as the surrounding countryside and mountains. The castle contains several museums as well as the sumptuously decorated apartments of Salzburg's former rulers.

Salzburg is a fabulous city to visit. There's plenty to see and do and the Baroque architecture in the city's compact old town make visiting a pleasant experience. The musical heritage of the city is fantastic and there are always concerts and performances to enhance a stay.
