Zadar - Croatia

Cathedral, Zadar Harbour and Rooftops, Zadar

Zadar is the main city of Northern Dalmatia, an area of jagged coastlines and lush islands with a mountainous backdrop. The region is parched and arid compared with the lush green interior of Croatia.

Zadar is a small town set on a narrow peninsular. The marbled streets are pleasant to wander and have sea views from just about everywhere, especially from the central bell tower. It's a steep climb to the top but the views are fantastic, over the harbour and mountains inland whilst out to sea you can see the many mountainous islands across the channel.

The edge of a town has a 'sea organ', a musical instrument driven by the motion of the sea. The waves produce different notes as they flow into the various pipes producing a strange, natural sound that grows louder as the wake from passing boats hit it.
