Giverny - France

Giverny is best known as the location of the impressionist painter Claude Monet's house and garden.  The house and gardens have been restored and replanted as they were in Monet's time, and opened to the public, showcasing the inspiration behind Monet's most famous paintings.

The house is small and simple and houses a substantial collection of Japanese engravings.  However the gardens are magnificent, with large collections of colourful flowers left to grow naturally.  The water gardens were inspired by the Japanese gardens of his engravings, based on curves and asymmetry with hanging weeping willows and wisteria.  The curved Japanese bridge provides both a focal point and a good place to enjoy the views.
