Hamelin - Germany

Glockenspiel clock, Hamelin Hamelin

Hamelin lies on the river Weser near the city of Hanover as is famous for the story of the Pied Piper.  The whole regions is famous for various fairly tales – the 'fairy tale' road passes through here, running for 350 miles from Hanau to Bremen.  Various towns here are connected with fairy tales – the brothers Grimm lived and worked here, documenting the famous folk tales.

Hamelin's story is recreated every Sunday in the town park – where school children are led around by the pied piper and the locals put on a stage show for visitors.  The story is also told at the Glockenspiel clock in the central square – where the chimed bells are met with a mechanical piper, leading the children away.

The rest of Hamelin is a  well preserved town, with many half timbered houses dating from the 16th to 18th century.  These have been painstakingly restored to their former glory, complete with murals and original inscriptions and blessings.
