Romantic Road - Germany

The Romantic Road, is one of Germany's themed roads, running through Bavaria and connecting several picturesque towns and villages into a single tourist area.  The road runs south from Wurzburg, to Fussen on the Austrian border, culminating in the magnificent Neuschwanstein Castle.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is many visitor's first stop, with many beautifully restored half timbered buildings.  The town centre is peaceful and pedestrinised and the buildings are nicely decorated with flowers forming a picturesque town square.  Outside of the walls has views of the surrounding hills and forest.

Next is Dinkelsbuhl, a walled town of cobbled streets.  30 towers stand guard along the wall, protecting the interior – the buildings here are even more grand and impressive.  Further south lies the Wieskirche (white church) – a grand rococo church, with an immense domed interior.  The walls are sumptuously decorated and gilded, with the dome a massive mural of the heavens.

At the end of the road lies Fussen, alongside the Forggensee lake.  Here the shops are much less grand, but instead decorated in murals appropriate to the trades.  Some of these are incredibly intricate, with trompe l'oeil decoration forming columns statues.
