Campania, Italy - Attraction Listing
Amalfi CoastThe Amalfi Coast is the most dramatic coastline in Italy and easily reached from Sorrento by ferry, or an organised boat trip.
CapriThe island of Capri has always been a very popular and expensive destination and is located just at the end of the Sorrento Peninsula with great views over the Bay of Naples.
HerculaneumHerculaneum is a few miles closer to Naples than Pompeii and was buried under lava in the same eruption that destroyed Pompeii. The excavated ruins here are a lot smaller, but in much better condition.
PaestumPaestum is a small town, with the remains of an ancient Greek colony at its centre. These ruins hold three massive Greek temples, some of the best preserved monuments of the ancient Greek world.
PompeiiThe ruins of Pompeii are huge and still only partially excavated. The entire town was buried under hot ash and rock in 79 AD and so is an extremely well preserved example of Roman life. Currently two-thirds of the city has been uncovered and this is more than enough for a full day's exploration - there's just too much to take in in one go.
SorrentoSorrento is a typical resort town, very busy and full of cafes, restaurants and tourist shops all bordered by the harbour. It's a great place to start excursions around the bay, to the islands of Capri and Ischia as well as the rugged Amalfi Coast.
VesuviusConstantly threatening the surrounding towns Vesuvius dominates the Bay of Naples. The only active volcano on the European mainland, Vesuvius is reached by a winding bus ride to the summit.
