Campervan Tips - Italy

Exploring Italy by campervan is a rewarding experience.  Beside the culturally importanmt cities, Italy's countryside is best explored with your own vehicle.

  • Campsites are generally good, if a little expensive.
  • Two pin Euro plugs are sometimes used instead of the standard hookup – bring an adapter
  • Most towns have city campsites, these tend to be located on the outskirts with good transport links to the city centre - eg Rome, Bologna and Verona
  • Other towns have campsites within walking distance of the city centres - eg Pisa, Florence or Ferrara
  • Venice has several campsites on the outskirts, some served by private shuttle buses, others by boat direct to the old city.
  • Some towns and tourist attractions have motorhome service areas in car parks - these don't allow overnight parking but have facilities for emptying waste tanks and refilling with fresh water.
  • Aree di Sosta are motorhome parking areas - some of these are municipal car parks, others privately run locations with minimal facilities for a small fee.
  • Any parking area can be used overnight as long as it is not specifically forbidden by local signs - although some locations are used by locals despite signs to the contrary.  These are generall safe to park overnight.
  • As with any off site parking, equipment should not be set up outside the van.
