BolognaBologna is much more a working city than either Rome of Florence and lacks the big tourist crowds. There's still plenty to see and do, and it's a pleasant city to stroll through.
ComacchioJust inland form the many beach resorts on the Adriatic coast is the small town of Comacchio. It used to be completely surrounded by water and built around a series of canals, much like Venice.
FerarraFerarra has some of the best preserved city walls in Italy and is dominated by the huge Castello Estense. Built in the 14th century, it has four towers around a central courtyard as well as its own moat.
RavennaRavenna is a pleasant city, quiet peaceful and spacious in the pedestrianised city centre. The main draw of the city is its Byzantine heritage. Ravenna was once the capital of the Western Roman Empire and then one of the outposts of the Byzantine Empire - they have left their mark in the form of mosaics in the city's religious monuments.
