San Gimignano - Italy

San Gimignano Towers

This strange town is perched on top of a hill surrounded by the Tuscan countryside. It's main features are a dozen tall towers each three or four stories higher than the neighbouring buildings, built in the 11th century by the town's feuding families.

The streets of San Gimignano are pleasant to wander, and there are lots of hidden parts of the town to explore and take you away from the main tourist areas. From several places there are fantastic views over the countryside with street cafes and restaurants to sit outside of and take it in. The towers themselves add a strange backdrop to the town.
