Cuenca - Spain

Cuenca CuencaSunflowers, near Cuenca

Cuenca is an old city of Spain on the edge of the great plains of Castille-La Mancha.  The old town is situated on a narrow clifftop on the bend of a deep gorge.  From the squares at the top it's a steep drop on both sides to the river valley below.  The narrow cobbled streets are evocative of the old Spain – cars cannot access this part of town and most modern life takes place in the new town below.  Cuenca's cathedral sits high on the clifftop, while the aptly named 'hanging houses' are perched on the edge of the cliff, with the lower floors sticking out over the cliffs.
