Interlaken - Switzerland

Interlaken Lake Brienz, InterlakenLake Brienz, InterlakenInterlaken and Lake Thun from Harder Kulm

Situated on a narrow strip of flat land between the lakes of Thun and Brienz, Interlaken is a popular destination and a great base for exploring some of Switzerland's most dramatic scenery.  The two lakes are surrounded by high mountain peaks, rising all the way to the Jungfrau, Monch and Eiger.  The tranquil lakes are server by regular passenger services and horse drawn carriages run through the town itself.

Interlaken is fast becoming an andventure sports centre, with many paragliders soaring overhead and landing on the town meadow.  The surrounding valleys are also popular for canyoning and white water rafting.  Those with a less adventurous streak can take advantage of the many hiking trails that start from Interlaken.  A popular destination is the top of Harder Kulm, set just north of the town and served by a furnicular railway.  From here are spectacular panormaic views over the town and both lakes as well as across to the towering mountains beyond.

Along both lakes are situated several castles and further up the valleys tumble serveral waterfalls including the famous Reichenbach Falls.  These fall steeply down onto the flat pastureland of the valley floor.

A very popular, if expensive, day trip from Interlaken is to ride the mountain train – the highest in Europe.  This climbs steeply to the Jungfraujoch, over 3400m up, passing through tunnels carved through both the Eiger and the Monch.  If the weather is clear, the views are amazing, with panoramic views over the glaciers and peaks of the region.
