Wat Plai Laem, Koh Samui - Thailand
Close to Wat Phra Yai is another temple complex, Wat Plai Laem. A larger temple complete with school, Wat Plai Laem also has its oversized statues. There's a small lake inside the complex on which the main sanctuary seemingly floats on a lotus flower. It's flanked on one side by a huge fat Buddha, also on its own tiny island. To the other side is a towering 18-armed statue of the Hindu deity Shiva, sat atop a dragon.
It's a very surreal temple, built seemingly in competition for visitors with the Big Buddha – and definitely worth a visit.
