Marble Mountains - Vietnam

Pagoda, Marble Mountains

Located just midway between Hoi An and Da Nang, the Marble Mountains are a set of five large marble outcrops on an otherwise flat plain. Each corresponds to one of the five elements of Chinese/Vietnamese religion. The largest of the mountains is the 'water' mountain and is full of caves and has several pagodas built by the emperor around 200 years ago. On a clear day there are stunning views over the plains and to the sea and islands beyond.

These caves were home to many different people, from the early Cham people to Viet Cong guerulla fighters but are now turned into shrines with mainly marble statues.
