Hoa Lu and Tam Coc - Vietnam

Tam Coc Tam CocHoa LuPagoda, Hoa Lu

Located a couple hours south of Hanoi, Hoa Lu and Tam Coc are two attractions set amongst the dramatic karst cliffs and rice fields of the Red River Delta.

Hoa Lu is the former Royal City before the capital was moved to Hanoi. Two historically temples remain dedicated to the first two kings of Vietnam. The surroundings are towering limestone rocks rising from the very flat landscape.

Tam Coc is further into the mountains and is a flooded river valley. Locals will take you on a journey upriver rowing the small boats with their feet which is bizarre to see! You are taken through three very low caves and between massive tree-covered peaks that make up this dramatic landscape. It's quite a special place - although the floating market on the return journey selling drinks and food is slightly strange. More sales pitches are made by the boat rowers who pull out handicrafts for you to look through on the return trip.
